, A. Impact on Growth
In 1892 Dr. Michael Schuster left Austria for El Paso, TX. He was an eye, ear, nose, and
throat specialist commissioned by the American Smelting and Refining Company to care for its
employees which were frequently injured working in the factories. In 1902 he established his
own clinic, which was expanded in 1906 to accommodate the needs of more patients. The clinic
was run by him and his wife until 1945 when a corporate charter was granted by the State of
Texas to take advantage of changes in healthcare funding. Through this charter, $1.8 million was
raised by the community, and another $1.6 million was received in federal funds to construct a
new 185-bed hospital known as Providence Memorial Hospital. (Paso Del Norte Foundation,
2020) In 1952 the hospital opened its doors and since then has continued to grow to serve the
booming population, expanding to a total of 5 campuses with almost 900 beds, including a

B. Service
The Hospitals of Providence hosts an annual Strides Against Stroke Walk to inform the
community on the dangers of a stroke and to increase awareness on the signs of strokes. Stroke is
a major health crisis facing our neighborhoods and is mostly preventable. (Chacon, 2020)
Educating people on the importance of physical activity and nutritious eating habits can help
them make informed decisions regarding their health and reduce stroke risk. Alerting the public
