DUE DATE: SEPTEMBER 2026
INTRODUCTION
Warehousing is an important component of logistics management because it enables
organisations to store, manage and distribute goods efficiently while balancing customer
service requirements with operating costs. Strategic warehousing involves making deliberate
decisions about the location, ownership, design, size, layout and operation of warehouses in
order to support the overall objectives of an organisation. For UHL, an effective warehousing
strategy can improve product availability, reduce unnecessary transportation and inventory
costs, and enhance the organisation’s ability to respond to customer demand. Warehousing
should therefore not be viewed merely as a storage activity, but as an integral part of the
supply chain that contributes to competitive advantage and customer satisfaction (Christopher,
2016). The following discussion evaluates the strategic warehousing requirements of UHL,
including the benefits of warehousing, ownership arrangements, warehouse decisions and the
trade-offs between transportation and inventory costs.
BENEFITS OF STRATEGIC WAREHOUSING FOR UHL
Strategic warehousing can provide UHL with both economic and service-related benefits. The
primary purpose is to ensure that products are available at the right place and at the right time
while avoiding unnecessary costs. A strategically designed warehouse network can allow UHL to
consolidate inventory, improve order fulfilment and create greater coordination between
procurement, storage, transportation and distribution activities (Rushton, Croucher & Baker,
2022).
Economic Benefits of Warehousing
One of the major economic benefits of warehousing for UHL is the ability to consolidate
products and shipments. By holding products at strategically located facilities, UHL can
