The Growth Of Tourism


• Tourism is part of the tertiary sector, which involves providing services
• A tourist is someone who travels for pleasure or business. They stay away from their usual residence for over 1 day, but
less than a year.
• The tourism industry facilitates the tourists by attracting accommodating and entertaining them
- Domestic tourism: taking part in tourism within your own country
- International tourism: taking part in tourism outside of your own country

Types of tourism:

• Mass tourism: large scale tourism that involves many people visiting the same location. (e.g. Benidorm, Spain)
• Adventure tourism: tourism involving travel to remote of exotic locations in order to take part in physically challenging
outdoor activities. (e.g. Mount Everest, Nepal)
• Dark tourism: tourism involving travel to places historically associated with death and tragedy (e.g. Auschwitz, Poland)
• Cultural tourism: visiting a place to engage with culture, people, history, art, architecture, religion… (e.g. Riga, Latvia)
• Eco tourism: visiting natural areas and aiming to have a low or positive impact on the environment, people & economy.

Reasons for increase in global tourism:
• Paid holiday: many companies give paid days off work for holidays • Technology: roads, internet, airplanes
• Shorter working hours: people have more free time • Elderly: old people have a lot of free time, can
• Wages increased: People have disposable income, meaning they spend savings
