A. Complete the VIA Character Strengths Survey using the “VIA Character Strengths Survey”
web link, and use the results of the survey to complete the following:
1. Describe an experience in which you used one of your five signature strengths (i.e., the
first five) from the survey results to overcome a challenge.
One of my signature strengths is leadership. I have been part of an organization which focuses on
bettering our community for our youth. Our main projects are youth sports, which my husband and I
have run, almost completely on our own, for several years. We provide football, softball/baseball, cross
country, and cheer at low or no cost to area families. After much recruiting, we have, thankfully, had a
few more members to come aboard for assistance. As leader of this group, I remind our team that our
main charge is to ensure the physical and emotional development of the children. I organize fundraisers,
scheduling, ordering uniforms and equipment, among many other tasks. I believe my leadership skills
have contributed to the growth of our organization, as well as the increasing number of participants in
our programs.

a. Explain how you could apply the strength identified in part A1 as a values-based leader
in your new position as the customer service manager from the scenario.
Being a good leader is vital in a position like this. A manager with a positive attitude keeps employees
motivated and striving towards the same goal. I believe it is important to be able to delegate tasks
based on my team members’ strengths. This will help decrease mistakes and give the team a sense of
purpose and direction, as well. Educating and mentoring the employees is also important for the
atmosphere and culture between management and subordinates.

2. Describe an experience in which being stronger in one of your five lesser strengths (i.e.,
the last five) from the survey results could have positively influenced the outcome.
One of my lesser strengths is Self-Regulation. I agree that it is a fault of mine and has been as long as I
can remember. A recent instance that was affected by procrastination was during my last term here at
WGU. I did not prepare and study for one of my courses like I should have, and waited until there were
only a couple of days left in my term before I scheduled my exam. The evening that I sat down to take
my exam, a huge thunderstorm arose and knocked out my electricity, which made it impossible to test
at that time. The next day at work, I was a nervous wreck thinking about getting in that exam before the
deadline. It all ended up all right, but I don’t want to do that again!

a. Explain how improving the lesser strength identified in part A2 will help accelerate
your values-based leadership abilities in your new position as the customer
service manager.
I would make it a priority to get our tasks completed in a timely fashion. The best way to be a
leader is to be an example. One way to improve this would be to set big jobs into smaller tasks.
Getting those finished would make the project seem more manageable. I also think knowing that I
