Module Objectives
Upon completion of this module, the student will be able to:
1. Compare the purposes of the literature review in quantitative and qualitative research.
2. Describe the scope of the review of the literature.
3. Specify strategies for literature searches.
4. Conduct a computerized search of the literature using relevant databases.
5. Describe the terms relevant to framework construction (concept, relational statement, conceptual model, theory, and conceptual
map).
6. Examine the different types of relational statements used in framework construction (asymmetrical, symmetrical, concurrent,
sequential, deterministic, tendency, probability, necessary, sufficient, and contingent).
7. Describe the statement hierarchy that is used in research (general proposition, specific proposition, and hypothesis).
8. Discuss the conceptual models that have been developed.
9. Specify strategies for expressing a framework as a conceptual map.
10. Explore the process for conceptually and operationally defining concepts in a study framework.
11. Discuss the process for constructing a framework from a theory.
12. Critique a study framework.
