Physical Fieldwork Question: To what extent is coastal
management effective at preventing erosion in Hornsea?
Q 5.2 Justify one primary data collection method used in
your physical geography enquiry. (3 marks)
Here you have two main options – either groyne transect or
sediment analysis.
Option A - Groyne Transect
One primary method of data collection I used in my enquiry
was a groyne transect. For this I had to measure the height of
the exposed groyne on both sides (north side & south side)
using a metre ruler. I needed to do this to see if the groyne was
preventing longshore drift. If it was stopping the process of LSD
the sand should be higher on the north side than the south
meaning the height of the exposed groyne would be lower. I
would expect this because the prevailing wind was coming from
the NE meaning LSD should be happening from N to S along the
Holderness coast.
Option B - Sediment Analysis
One primary method of data collection I used in my enquiry
was a sediment analysis. I used the Powers Roundness Index, a
scale of 1-6, to assess how angular (1) or rounded (6) sediment
on the beach was between the sea wall and the sea edge. I
needed to do this to see how much erosion was taking place at
different points on the beach via attrition. If the sediment was
rounder (number 4-6) there would be more attrition but if the
sediment was more angular (numbers 1-3) there would be less
attrition. If the groynes were reducing erosion I would expect to
find more angular sediment by the sea wall as the waves are
not reaching that far up the beach.
