QUESTION 1

Jean Piaget’s Stages of Cognitive Development and Their Influence on
Mathematics Education

Introduction

Jean Piaget’s theory of cognitive development is one of the most influential theories for

understanding how children acquire knowledge and develop their thinking abilities.

Piaget viewed children as active participants in their own learning rather than passive

recipients of information. According to his constructivist perspective, children build

knowledge through interaction with their environment and gradually develop

increasingly sophisticated ways of thinking (Piaget, 1952). Cognitive development occurs

through four major stages: the sensorimotor stage, the preoperational stage, the

concrete operational stage and the formal operational stage. Each stage represents a

different form of reasoning and has important implications for teaching and learning.

Piaget’s theory is particularly relevant to mathematics education because mathematical

learning requires children to develop concepts such as number, quantity, classification,

measurement, logical relationships and, eventually, abstract reasoning. The theory

suggests that mathematical instruction should correspond with learners’ cognitive

abilities and should provide opportunities for them to explore, manipulate and reason

about mathematical ideas. However, Piaget’s stages should not be treated as rigid age-

based categories because individual development varies and children may demonstrate

more advanced thinking in some situations than others (Lourenço and Machado, 1996).
