ATOMIC HABITS
Why You Keep Doing What You Don't Want to Do — And How to Change It

Have you ever felt like you're moving down in life, even though you're trying to become the person
you want to be? It usually happens around New Year's. Or around 1st date of the month. You
promise yourself that this year or month will be different. You'll quit the bad habits, build the good
ones, and finally become the person you've imagined. But a few weeks later... you're just right
back where you started. So why does that happen? And more importantly, how do you actually
change?

Think about something you know you should be doing.

Maybe it's studying for an exam, finishing a project, exercising, or reading.

Maybe it's building the business idea you've been thinking about for months.

Maybe it's simply putting your phone down and doing the thing you already know matters.

You know what needs to be done.

And that's not the problem.

The problem begins when you sit down to do it.

Your phone is nearby.

A notification appears.

You check it.

You tell yourself you'll only be gone for a minute.

Then you decide to watch just one video.

One becomes another.

Then another.

And eventually you look at the clock.

One hour.

Forty minutes gone.

Now you feel annoyed with yourself.

So you make a promise.

,"Tomorrow I'll be more disciplined."

Then tomorrow comes.

And somehow...

the exact same thing happens again.

This is where most people make the wrong diagnosis.

They say:

"I need more motivation."

"I need more discipline."

"I'm lazy."

"I have no focus."

"I just need to try harder."

But what if none of those explanations is the real problem?

What if you're not failing because you don't care?

What if you're not fundamentally lazy?

You make a timetable.

You make a clear decision in your mind that this is important.

You know exactly what you should be doing.

But somehow minutes become hours.

Hours become days.

Days become weeks.

And eventually months pass...

while the task you promised yourself you'd complete still hasn't even properly begun.

Why?

You had a goal.

You had time.

You had a plan.

You even had the intention.

So what happened?

,Something called distraction entered the system.

And once it did, your attention followed it.

Then frustration followed the lost time.

Then guilt followed the frustration.

And finally, you began questioning yourself.

"Maybe I'm not capable of doing this."

"Maybe this is impossible."

But think about that sentence.

How can something be impossible when you haven't genuinely started?

You weren't defeated by the task.

You were repeatedly defeated before reaching the task.

And that distinction matters.

Because if the problem were simply that you were incapable, there would be very little you could
do.

But if the problem is the system surrounding your behavior...

then the system can be changed.

That is what we're going to uncover.

Because your behavior is not appearing randomly.

It's being shaped by your environment, your expectations, your surroundings, your previous
experiences, and most importantly, by what you've repeated.

And every time you repeat a behavior, you make that behavior a little more familiar.

That's the central idea behind Atomic Habits.

But this isn't going to be just a book summary.

The goal is to take the ideas and translate them into the moments where your real life actually
breaks down:

the moment you reach for your phone,

the moment you postpone difficult work,

the moment motivation disappears,

the moment progress seems invisible,

, and the moment you tell yourself you'll start tomorrow.

Because if you understand those moments...

you can change what happens inside them.

Your life usually doesn't change because of one enormous decision.

It changes through ordinary decisions that are repeated long enough to become automatic.

And that means something incredibly important:

If your repeated behavior is helping create your current life...

then changing your repeated behavior can change the direction of your life.

But first, you have to understand why your old behavior keeps winning.

And that begins with something that looks almost too small to matter.
