Theory Analysis of Pender's Health Promotion Model Using the
Walker and Avant Theory Analysis Approach
Introduction
Nursing theories provide a framework that guides clinical practice, research, education,

and leadership. They help nurses understand patient behaviors, develop evidence-based

interventions, and improve health outcomes. Selecting an appropriate nursing theory strengthens

the scientific foundation of research by providing direction for intervention development and

evaluation. For this paper, Pender's Health Promotion Model (HPM) is analyzed using the

Walker and Avant theory analysis approach. Developed by Dr. Nola J. Pender, the Health

Promotion Model focuses on improving health through behavior change and emphasizes the

individual's motivation to engage in healthy behaviors. This theory is particularly applicable to

chronic disease management because it addresses the cognitive and behavioral factors that

influence lifestyle modification. As healthcare systems increasingly focus on disease prevention

and patient self-management, Pender's Health Promotion Model provides an effective framework

for designing interventions that promote healthier behaviors and improve patient outcomes

(McEwen & Wills, 2023).

Overview of Pender's Health Promotion Model

Dr. Nola J. Pender introduced the Health Promotion Model in 1982 to provide nurses

with a framework for understanding the factors that motivate individuals to adopt healthy

behaviors. The model was revised in 1996 and again in 2002 to incorporate emerging evidence

regarding health promotion and behavioral science. Unlike models that primarily emphasize

disease prevention, Pender's model focuses on achieving optimal health and well-being by

encouraging positive lifestyle behaviors (Pender et al., 2023).
