, Healthcare Quality and Safety in Neonatal Intensive Care Nursing
Introduction

Healthcare quality and safety are fundamental principles that guide the delivery of

effective, patient-centered care. As healthcare systems continue to evolve, organizations are

increasingly focused on improving clinical outcomes while minimizing preventable harm.

Nurses play a vital role in achieving these goals by implementing evidence-based practices,

participating in quality improvement initiatives, promoting patient safety, and collaborating with

interdisciplinary teams. Within the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), quality and safety

initiatives are particularly important because premature and critically ill newborns are among the

most vulnerable patient populations. This paper discusses healthcare quality and safety,

examines the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) six domains of healthcare

quality and the Joint Commission's National Patient Safety Goals, analyzes organizations

dedicated to improving healthcare quality and safety, describes the impact of regulatory agencies

on NICU practice, and reflects on how a Christian worldview supports a commitment to

excellence in patient care.

Healthcare Quality and Safety

Although healthcare quality and patient safety are closely related, they represent distinct

concepts. Healthcare quality refers to the degree to which healthcare services increase the

likelihood of desired health outcomes and are consistent with current professional knowledge

(Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality [AHRQ], 2024). Patient safety focuses specifically

on preventing harm associated with healthcare delivery by reducing medical errors, improving

communication, and implementing reliable systems of care.
