AQA GCSE CHEMISTRY REQUIRED PRACTICALS - PAPER 2
Watch the videos and write down the method for each of the required practical’s below,
including a 1-line summary. There is an example below from paper 1 as a model method.
Making Salts - GCSE Science Required Practical https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qIOMlwBoe_4
Please watch the video so you can revise it and also to see how I have used the same words as the presenter.
Method for making salts
1. Using a measuring cylinder, measure 40cm3 of sulfuric acid and pour it into a beaker and heat it gently.
2. Add an excess of copper oxide, stirring and adding it until you can still see the black powder.
3. Filter the solution through a funnel with filter paper inside into a conical flask.
4. Pour the blue solution into an evaporating basin.
5. Heat gently over a beaker of boiling water.
6. Once the water has evaporated, scrape the crystals onto a piece of filter paper.
Summary: Sulfuric acid, heat, excess copper oxide, filter, evaporate, crystals
AQA GCSE CHEMISTRY REQUIRED PRACTICALS - PAPER 2
1. Rates of reaction – 2 methods
A. Reactions where a solid is formed – the ‘Disappearing Cross Method’
Rates of Reaction - GCSE Science Required Practical https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gl6LVl7oAlU
1. Place paper marked with a cross under a conical flask
2. Measure 50cm³ of Sodium Thiosulphate into a measuring cylinder
3. Then measure 10cm³ of the Hydrochloric Acid
4. Start timer as soon as hydrochloric acid has been poured into conical flask
5. Stir to mix chemicals and observe directly above until cross is completely undetectable
6. When the cross becomes undetectable through the solution the stop the timer and record the results
7. Repeat experiment by using different concentrations of Sodium Thiosulphate which is diluted by distilled
water. Until you reach 8g/dm³
Summary – Paper, Measure, Timer, Mix, Observations, Repetitions
Reactions where a gas is formed: Rates of Reaction 2 (Collecting Gas) - GCSE Science Required Practical
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ssa3wh3RNt0
1. Measure 50cm³ of Hydrochloric acid the pour this into conical flask
2. Place a bun and delivery tube on the top of the conical flask
3. Place an empty measuring cylinder in the rough and fill with water to remove air bubbles and clamp about
1 cm above the bottom of the trough
4. Place the delivery tube under the water and into the measuring cylinder
5. Add the magnesium to the conical flask and place the bun on top to direct the gas formed through the
delivery tube
