Assessment 4 – Question 4
Critically analyse the factors that contribute to food insecurity and how these can
be ameliorated
Introduction
Food insecurity is the condition in which people lack reliable physical, social or
economic access to adequate, nutritious and safe food. It extends beyond food
shortages and reflects broader inequalities in livelihoods, resource distribution and
environmental sustainability. Learning Unit 5 demonstrates that food security is closely
linked to water security, climate resilience and effective governance of natural
resources.

Factors contributing to food insecurity
A primary cause of food insecurity is economic inequality. Low household income,
unemployment and unequal ownership of productive resources prevent many families
from accessing sufficient food despite food being available in markets. Jacobsen et al.
(2013) argue that improving food production alone cannot eliminate hunger unless
vulnerable populations are able to benefit from agricultural development. Poverty
therefore reduces both food access and nutritional quality.
A second factor is climate variability. Extreme weather events such as droughts, floods
and heatwaves have become more frequent, reducing agricultural productivity and
increasing crop failure. Learning Unit 5 explains that changing rainfall patterns and
rising temperatures threaten water-dependent livelihoods, particularly among rural
communities that depend on rain-fed farming. Climate change therefore undermines the
stability of food systems and increases the risk of chronic hunger.
