SECTION A: ESSAY PREPARATION
1. How to Write a Literary Essay
A literary essay must present a clear argument about the play. It should not become a
summary of events.

1.1 Interpret the Topic

Before writing, identify:

• the main issue
• the instruction word
• the characters or ideas that must be discussed
• whether a balanced response is required

A topic that asks “to what extent” requires a clear judgement.

1.2 Plan the Essay

Briefly plan:

• your main argument
• three or four supporting points
• relevant incidents or quotations
• your final judgement

Use only evidence that supports the topic.

1.3 Structure

Introduction

State your main argument clearly. Do not retell the plot.

Body Paragraphs

Each paragraph should include:

• a clear point
• relevant evidence
• an explanation of what the
evidence proves
• a link to the topic

Conclusion

Return to the topic and give a final judgement. Do not introduce new evidence.

1.4 Use Evidence Correctly

Support your argument with:

• important incidents
• character actions
• consequences
• short accurate quotations

Explain the evidence instead of merely listing it. When you are uncertain of the exact
wording, refer accurately to the incident rather than inventing a quotation.

1.5 Avoid Plot Summary

Plot summary:
Mary becomes frightened in court and accuses Proctor.

Analysis:
Mary’s betrayal of Proctor shows how fear allows Abigail to maintain control and
prevents the truth from being accepted.

1.6 Final Checklist

Before submitting, check that:

• the exact topic has been answered
• the argument is clear
• each paragraph develops one point
• the evidence is accurate and relevant
• incidents are analysed rather than retold
• the conclusion gives a final judgement
• names, events and quotations are correct
• the essay is approximately 400–450 words

Six Core Essay Questions
2.1 Reputation, Honour and Integrity
Essay Question

Many of the characters in The Crucible are completely dishonourable and cannot be
redeemed.

Critically discuss the extent to which you agree with this statement.

Your response should take the form of a well-constructed essay of 400–450 words.
