, Annotated Outline: Narrative Therapy as a Postmodern
Model in Marriage and Family Therapy
I. Model Description
A. Context and Theoretical Foundations
1. Narrative Therapy was developed by Michael White and David
Epston in the 1980s in Australia and New Zealand. It is rooted in
postmodernism and social constructionism, which assert that
reality is constructed through language and social interaction.
2. Core idea: “The person is not the problem—the problem is the
problem” (White & Epston, 1990).
3. Systems theory alignment: Problems are understood in relation to
social, relational, and cultural contexts, rather than residing within
individuals.
White & Epston (1990) introduced NT as an alternative to
pathologizing therapy, emphasizing deconstructing dominant problem-
saturated narratives.
