PYC2612 ASSIGNMENT 1 - SEMESTER 2, 2026

DUE 21 AUGUST 2026

Introduction

My assignment explores the foundational concepts of child and adolescent
development. It requires me to reflect on my own experiences and apply key
developmental theories from Units 1 to 4 to real-life situations. The goal is to show a
deep understanding of how humans grow and change from conception through early
childhood, and how this knowledge can be applied in everyday life (Louw & Louw,
2022).

Unit 1: Foundations of Child and Adolescent Development

Question 1.1

Think about the ongoing debate between nature and nurture. Reflect on your
own life: which aspects do you believe have influenced your development the
most? Share your reasoning and provide personal examples.

The "nature vs. nurture" debate asks whether we are shaped more by our genes
(nature) or by our environment and experiences (nurture). In my own life, I believe both
have played a vital role, but my upbringing and environment (nurture) have had a more
noticeable impact on my personality and skills.

For example, I consider myself a very sociable and outgoing person. I believe this is
largely due to the environment I grew up in. My family was always very social, with
frequent gatherings and an emphasis on spending time with friends and extended

, family. This nurturing environment taught me how to interact with others from a very
young age (Louw & Louw, 2022).

On the other hand, I also have a natural talent for music, which I believe is partly
influenced by genetics (nature). However, this talent only developed because my
parents provided me with music lessons and encouraged me to practice (nurture). This
shows that even traits that may have a genetic basis still need the right environment to
be fully realised (Louw & Louw, 2022). Therefore, while my genes provided a
foundation, my environment has been the key factor in shaping who I am today.

Question 1.2

Developmental psychologists examine physical, cognitive, and socio-emotional
growth. Consider which of these areas has impacted your life the most and
describe why. (5 Marks)

The area of development that has impacted my life the most is cognitive development.
Cognitive development refers to how we think, learn, and understand the world (Louw &
Louw, 2022). My journey through school and university has been a continuous process
of cognitive growth.

As a child, my cognitive development was shaped by my parents and teachers who
encouraged my curiosity and taught me how to solve problems. As I grew older, my
ability to think abstractly and critically developed significantly. For instance, learning
history and science in high school didn't just teach me facts; it taught me how to
analyse information, make connections between different events, and form my own
opinions. This skill has been crucial for my success at university, where I must
constantly evaluate complex ideas and theories.
