Justifying Research Designs
Correlational studies seek to find out if there are differences in characteristics of a
population depending on whether or not its subjects have been exposed to an event of interest
in a naturalistic setting (Craig, 2019). Correlational researcher is considered non-experimental
research because the researchers are measuring two variables to assess a statistical
relationship. According to Price (2017), “There are many reasons that researchers interested in
statistical relationships between variables would choose to conduct a correlational study rather
than an experiment”. Some of these reasons include not believing the statistical relationship is
a casual one or because they are not interested in casual relationships. Correlational research
is used to describe the strength and direction of the relationship of two variables.
Types of Correlational Studies
Correlational studies are all also known as observational studies. There are three types
of correlation studies that can be done and each type has its own strength and weakness. The
first type of correlational study it the naturalistic observation. For this type, researchers record
observations of variables in a natural setting. This is a non-experimental method in which no
variables are manipulated (n.d). A strength related to this type of observation is that researchers
can observe participants in a natural setting where real behaviors can be shown. The survey
methods is another type of correlational study. This method used questionnaires and surveys to
measure the researchers’ variables. Researchers like this method because it is relatively
inexpensive and does not require a lot of time. The negative side of this method is results can
often be too general. The last type off correlational type is archival research. This type of
research uses secondary data like case studies, historical documents, and previous research.
The type of research is also relatively cheap and the data is readily available. Some of the
negative aspects of archival research include the lack of control the researcher has over data
collection methods which makes it difficult to determine if the data is really valid and reliable.
These types of studies are expressed using a display of scores, associations between scores,
