,Two main categories of respiratory drugs
Bronchodilators
Anti-inflammatory
BRONCHODILATORS
stimulate the beta₂ cells of the adrenergic or sympathetic nervous system (SNS)
beta₂-adrenergic agonists
Stimulate the beta₂ cells of the adrenergic/SNS → BRONCHODILATION
Relieve bronchospasms and to prevent exercise-induced bronchospasm (EIB)
Short acting or long acting for either:
- fast relief (rescue inhalers)
- long-term management
beta₂-adrenergic agonists
Stimulates beta₂-adrenergic receptors → BRONCHODILATION
Minor effects:
↑ ciliary motility
↓ histamine release
beta₂-adrenergic agonists
Avoid caffeine
Monitor/log asthma exacerbations and triggers
Report severe tremors that affect ADLs
beta₂-adrenergic agonists
, chest pain
tachycardia
palpitations
tremors
anxiety
SE of ________
beta₂-adrenergic agonists such as albuterol
Notify HCP if:
- Severe tremors
- changes in asthma exacerbation patterns
- chest pain*
- palpitations*
- ↑ HR*
*especially if Hx of CV disease or HTN or on digitalis med
beta₂-adrenergic agonists
Use CAUTIOUSLY in:
- tachydysrhythmias
- digitalis toxicity
- diabetes
- hyperthyroidism
- cardiovascular disease
- HTN
- angina
