Strands & History
Established in 1834 (two years after the Great Reform Act, which extended the
franchise to men over 21 without property), the Conservatives have undergone
gradual ideological changes over their near-200 year history.
The most prominent divide in the twentieth- and twenty-first centuries has been
between Thatcherites and One Nation conservatives. There is also division between
Europhiles and Eurosceptics.

One Nation - Larger, welfare state
Thatcherite - Laissez-faire economy
One Nation - Keynesian mixed economy
