1.1 Selected area: Sabie, Mpumalanga
For this assignment, Sabie in Mpumalanga Province has been selected as the tourism
destination area. Sabie appears on the approved list of towns provided in the Assignment 01
instructions, which require students to select one town or region and examine its tourism
potential using the ideas covered in Learning Units 1 and 2. Sabie is suitable for this
investigation because it has natural attractions, adventure activities, forestry heritage,
accommodation businesses and access to several well-known attractions along the
Panorama Route.

environment, accessibility, attractions and relationship between people and the environment

2. PART 2: DISCUSSION AND ANALYSIS OF SABIE
2.1 Introduction to Sabie
2.1.1 Location of Sabie
Sabie is located in Mpumalanga on the north eastern part of the Drakensberg
Escarpment and forms part of the wider Panorama Route tourism area. Its
approximate absolute location is 25°05.888 South and 30°46.739 East. In relative
terms, Sabie lies about 64 kilometres from Mbombela and is also positioned within
travelling distance of the Kruger National Park and other attractions found along the
Mpumalanga escarpment.
Location is important because it affects the natural resources found in an area, the
travelling distance for visitors and the condition of the routes used to reach the
destination. The GGH2606 study material explains that absolute location shows the
