Critical Reflection Summary – Mark: 18/20

I commenced this course having a limited understanding of leadership. During the first seminar,
Casey Squires introduced the 5 I's of transformational leadership, which appeared to be the best
form of leadership to strive towards as it was both effective and active, as compared to
transactional and passive-avoidant (Deng et al., 2022). Upon completing my ‘leadership key
aspect pitch’, I had firmly believed that ‘acting with integrity’ was the most crucial aspect that I
wished to improve on. I believe that this was because the ‘ideal leader’ whom I looked up to was
my water polo coach –what I admired most about her leadership was her honesty, her
trustworthiness and her transparency. The “implicit leadership theory” which Casey discussed
had clearly been operating in shaping my perception of leadership. I have now come to realise
that the cognitive approaches, such as self concept, were perhaps the most relevant.
