WASTE WATER EXAM PREP QUESTIONS
AND ANSWERS EXPERT VERIFIED
MATERIAL

●● Grit Removal
Answer: Removes sand & gravel (Preliminary Treatment)

●● Activated sludge (Mixed Liquor)
Answer: A suspended media process where by air is bubbled in a media
in a large container. It contains bacterial agents that can digest sludge
into inorganic materials. It is very biologically reactive & can degrade
rapidly.

●● Trickling filter
Answer: Fixed film. A more robust method than suspended media, the
plastic filter grids in large tanks. A large rotary arm is used to pump the
wastewater through and distributes the wastewater through a multiple
spray head on top of the filter. Used for large community systems.

●● Oxidation Ponds
Answer: Relatively shallow ponds where algae grow and treat
wastewater.

,●● Composting Toilets
Answer: Doesn't work too well on septic waste because the nitrogen
carbon ratio isn't quite rite, so saw dust needs to be added to it.

●● Quaternary Treatment
Answer: NSF standard 245 - Waste water taken up to a point where
water is almost drinkable.

●● C32
Answer: Plumber that can pump

●● C34
Answer: Plumber that can install

●● Degradation
Answer: The visible evidence of the destruction of the water's quality
which may be affected by runoff from heavily grazed areas. Bacterial
concentration is high in this type of wastewater.

●● Decomposition
Answer: The anaerobic state of bacterial degradation when there is no
dissolved oxygen in the water.

, ●● Recovery
Answer: Water's dissolved oxygen content is restored.

●● Clean Water
Answer: The completion of the purification process

●● Digested Sludge
Answer: The process which turns highly volatile & reactive raw organic
solid matter into stable inorganic matter through a anaerobic process. It
looks like used coffee grounds & is an excellent soil conditioner.

●● Fresh Wastewater (Gray water)
Answer: Slightly turbid & musty water, but no offensive smell. Easily
treated & highly putrid

●● Septic Wastewater
Answer: Requires more treatment, cost & energy because the water is
degraded. This is why the water needs to travel to the treatment site
within 2 days. Highly putrid, often black that smells like rotten egg
(hydrogen sulfide). This is water is in anaerobic decomposition.

●● Septic Tank
