Personal Mastery Scenario-Based Solver Projects
Scenario #1
(Self-Awareness)

As the float nurse assistant manager, Shiela notices that one of her float nurses, Marcus, has

been unusually withdrawn during his shift in the Progressive Care Unit. When she

approaches him, he sighs and says, “I’m trying my best, but every time I float here, I feel

like I’m failing. The charge nurse barely acknowledges me, and I feel like I’m slowing

everyone down.”

Later that afternoon, a medication error nearly occurs when Marcus misreads a dosage while

distracted. Shiela steps in and prevents the error, but Marcus becomes visibly upset. “I

shouldn’t be here,” he mutters. “I’m not cut out for this unit.”

Shiela realizes that her own rushed communication earlier in the day may have contributed

to his stress. She recalls giving him rapid-fire instructions without checking his

understanding. She approaches him gently: “Marcus, I want to talk about what happened

today. I think I may have added pressure without meaning to.”

Marcus looks surprised but relieved. “I appreciate you saying that. I didn’t want to

disappoint you.”

Shiela recognizes that her leadership presence directly affects how float nurses perceive their

competence and belonging. She decides to address the situation with self-awareness,

acknowledging her influence and adjusting her approach to better support Marcus.

Skill Application #1
Opportunity Statement
(Self-Awareness)

This scenario presents an opportunity for me to strengthen my self-awareness as a float nurse

, 3

assistant manager by recognizing how my communication style and leadership presence

directly influence the confidence, performance, and emotional well-being of float nurses

transitioning into unfamiliar units.

Social and Emotional Power Skill
(Self-Awareness)

Self-awareness is the ability to understand one’s emotions, behaviors, and impact on others

(Goleman, 1995). In this scenario, my rushed communication unintentionally increased

Marcus’s stress, contributing to his sense of inadequacy. By applying self-awareness, I can

acknowledge how my tone, pacing, and expectations may have influenced his emotional

state. This skill allows me to pause, reflect, and adjust my leadership approach to better

support float nurses who often feel vulnerable when entering new units. Research shows that

leaders who demonstrate self-awareness create psychologically safe environments that

improve team performance and trust (Walumbwa et al., 2008). Using this skill, I can model

humility, validate Marcus’s feelings, and rebuild his confidence through supportive dialogue.

Strength

One of my strengths is reflective thinking. I naturally evaluate my actions and consider how

they affect others. In this situation, I can use this strength to examine how my

communication may have unintentionally contributed to Marcus’s distress. By reflecting

honestly, I can adjust my approach, slow down my instructions, and ensure clarity. This

helps me support Marcus more effectively and reinforces my commitment to being an

empathetic and self-aware leader.
