The function of the FD at elevator operations is limited to the safe removal of person trapped in
the elevator car or hoist way. Repairs to and reactivation of elevators are not carried out by

Problems arise from defective or non functioning electrical or mechanical devices and
equipment
Electrical problems are the most frequent cause of elevator Malfunction - Answer Common
causes of electrical problems:
-Car or hoist way door contacts open
-Blown fuses
-Shorting of electrical cables.
Mechanical problems, though not as common, may also be encountered
Locate the care using the following: - Answer -Lobby control panel
-Intercom or telephone system of stuck car
-Open hoistway door at first floor and look up shaft (Key devices are usually required at low
levels, but may be required at all levels)
-Look through Glass panel, if moving DO NOT OPEN
, -Locate counterweight
-Enter car in same bank and open top hatch (if no damage to elevator will be done)
-Use floor selector in machinery room (indicates exact location of car)
Primary removal procedures are simple approaches performed without turning off the elevator
power.
There are two types of primary removal procedures.
The order in which they are tried is not important. Try all if necessary. - Answer -Check
electrical contacts (if passenger have activated the emergency stop button these methods will
not work. Passengers must be instructed to deactivate the emergency stop button)
-Have passenger press door open button.
-Press lobby call button
-Instruct passenger to ensure car door is fully closed
-Have members physically close all hoistway doors on the shaft (Check doors in vicinity of the
stuck car first)
Second type of Primary removal
Fireman service
Fireman service will override the emergency stop - Answer -Activate Fireman service phase 1
(stuck car may return to lobby or sky lobby and open its doors)
-Fireman service should be DEACTIVATED when the car responds by returning to the lobby, OR
its clear that the care isn't responding.
**Summon an elevator mechanic if Primary removal procedures fail. (number required to be
posted in the machinery room near the power switch)
Precautions during secondary and emergency removal procedures: - Answer -Power
removal----whenever secondary or emergency procedures, dispatch 2 members to shut of
power to stalled car
Members are not to enter the shaft or remove passengers from the car until assured power has
been removed.
When passengers are removed from a car between floors they should be taken up and out of
the car if practical. This eliminates the possibility of a passenger falling down the shaft after
exiting the elevator. If they are removed to the lower landing, the shaft opening must be
protected. - Answer Members operating in the shaft are to be secured by a life saving rope.
Members shall not normally be permitted to enter the shaft below the elevator car. During a
rescue necessitating members entering the shaft below the car, the power switch must be
turned off.
No adjustment to or prying of the elevator machinery brake shall be attempted. The brake will
be in a safe position and should not be tampered with.
