A. Persona Description
A1. Demographics
Nia is an 8-year-old African American student in the 3rd grade who attends
a public elementary school. She has been diagnosed with autism spectrum
disorder (ASD) and receives support services through an IEP. Nia is verbal
and is academically strong, but she learns best with routine and instructions
are clear. She is a visual learner and does well when lessons include
pictures or hands-on activities.
A2. Contextual Influences
Contextual Influence 1: Family and Home Environment
Nia lives in a two-bedroom apartment in a low-income apartment complex
with her mother, grandmother, and two younger sisters. Her mother works
full time as a medical assistant and her grandmother provides after-school
care. The home is loving and supportive but cramped and noisy at times.
Impact on Learning:
Environmental factors such as noise level and lack of space play a big part
in Nia’s learning. The noise at home also makes it difficult for Nia to
concentrate on her studies. (Schunk, 2019).
