Needs Assessment
The needs of each community are frequently similar yet unique depending on a variety of
factors. These factors can include basic demographics such as population, age, ethnicity, and
median income of the residents of the community. An example of unique needs is location
(mountains, plains, or near oceans), types of transportation available and local and state budgets.
It is important that all factors and demographics are adequately evaluated in order to have an
effective community.
For this task, I used several assessment tools. The demographics assessment allowed me
to look at the data for the city and its individual neighborhoods. The neighborhood/community
safety inventory allowed me to review safety issues with crime, violence, emergency response
and safety hazards. The windshield surgery allowed me to be on the bus and view major areas of
the city but also see observe the people, parks and safety issues firsthand. The scavenger hunt
allowed me to view areas of the community where the people congregate and receive assistance.
Demographics
Sentinel City has population of 663,862 people living in four different neighborhoods.
The percentages of population are 7.4% for persons 0-5 years old, 21.7% for persons 5-18 years
old, and 10.5% of persons 65 years and older. The race percentages are 52.7% white persons,
10.4% for Black or African Americans, 31.5% for Hispanic or Latino, 2.0% for American Indian
and Alaska Native, 3.7% for Asian persons and 0.2% for Native Hawaiian or other Pacific
Islander persons. The median household income of Sentinel City is $49,091. The percentage of
persons living below the poverty level is 18.9%. The number of Veterans in Sentinel City is
