translating technical findings into a format that is accessible to policymakers, the media, and the
public (CDC, 2023). The choice of which graph to use is critical, as different data types and
analytical questions require specific visual formats.

This assignment discusses five fundamental graphical tools used in public health: histograms,
epidemic curves, bar graphs, line graphs, and scatterplots. Each serves a distinct purpose—from

2. Histograms

2.1 Definition and Construction
A histogram is a graphical representation used to display the distribution of a continuous variable,
such as age, blood pressure, incubation period, or time (Kirkwood & Sterne, 2003). This is the key
distinction that differentiates it from a bar graph. Because a histogram's x-axis represents continuous,
numerical data, its bars are adjacent and touch one another, signifying that there are no gaps between
the intervals, or "bins," into which the data are grouped (Altman, 1991). The y-axis represents the
frequency or count of cases within each interval.
