Epizootic lymphangitis is mainly transmitted when the fungus enters the body through
cuts, wounds or abrasions on the skin. The disease can spread through:
• Direct contact with infected horses or contaminated discharge from skin lesions.
• Contaminated equipment such as grooming tools, saddles, harnesses and
stable equipment.
• Flies and other biting insects that carry infectious material from one horse to
another.
• Contaminated environments such as stables where infected animals have been
kept.
• Poor hygiene and improper disinfection of equipment.
1.2 How is epizootic lymphangitis diagnosed?
The disease can be diagnosed by:
• Examining the horse for typical skin nodules and ulcers along the lymph vessels.
• Collecting pus or discharge from the lesions.
• Examining the sample under a microscope to identify the causative organism.
• Growing the organism in a laboratory culture if necessary.
• Considering the animal's history and clinical signs together with laboratory
