SPSS Assignment #1: Entering Data into SPSS and Generating Descriptive Statistics (20 Points)
I have abided by the College of Charleston’s Honor Code while working on this assignment. Typing
my name below indicates that I have created the data file and conducted the analyses
independently, and that the work I am turning in is my own.
Name: Kelly Brady
Thirty students at the College of Charleston were given a difficult short-term memory task in
which they attempted to remember increasingly-long sequences of numbers while undergoing
a distractor task. The task began with 2-digit numbers and stopped with 11-digit numbers.
For example, a participant was given a 2-digit number to remember. If correct, they were
then given a 3-digit number to remember and this continued until they failed to remember a
sequence accurately. Each participant contributed one data point to the study - the longest
digit sequence he or she could accurately recall in order, and this was taken as an estimate of
memory span. In the sample, the shortest span was 2 and the longest was 11. Here is a
frequency distribution table of the raw scores:
X f
11 1
10 1
9 1
8 2
7 2
6 3
5 4
4 6
3 9
2 1
Your homework assignment is to enter these data into an SPSS
data file and use SPSS to generate descriptive statistics for the
sample.
Fill in each blank below and attach copies of the requested
output: Mean = 5.03 Range =
9
Median = 4.00 Variance = 5.413
Mode = 3 Standard Deviation = 2.327
Attach a pdf file of the SPSS table and histogram containing the above requested descriptive
statistics. In the space below, describe the approximate shape of this distribution and your
reasoning:
, PSYC 211 – SPSS Assignment 1 - Page
The approximate shape of this distribution is a positively 2skewed distribution it refers to a
longer tail on the right.
