⩥ Follow-on counseling: Documenting the session.
Answer: There are three important aspects listed on the example
worksheet: subjects discussed, targets for the coming period, and notes
on accomplishments since the last counseling session. The worksheet
can be filled in before the session and used as a guide. The senior and
the junior should make any necessary changes to reflect what actually
happened at the close of the counseling session. Documentation of a
counseling session is only for the use of the senior and the junior and is
not to be forwarded in the reporting chain, nor passed from one senior to
the next. When the senior/junior relationship ends, all documentation
should be destroyed.

At minimum, the counseling notes should provide:

The date of the counseling session

The name of the Marine who received the counseling

The subjects that were discussed

,The targets/tasks that were set

⩥ Which counseling approach focuses on the the development of a
junior's ability to recognize and correct their own deficiencies?.
Answer: - Non-directive approach

⩥ Mentoring Philosophy.
Answer: Since its inception, the Marine Corps has emphasized the
importance of passing on professional knowledge to those we are
privileged to lead. By definition, a mentor is a trusted counselor or
guide. There are no set rules for a mentoring program, but general
guidelines apply.

The most important thing to remember is that mentoring is a
professional association formed to enhance a junior Marine's
professional and personal worth. The spirit of mentoring is in grained in
the belief that leadership qualities can be developed within the
individual Marine, and that Marine leaders have the responsibility for
developing those qualities.

The rules and regulations that define the relationships between senior
and junior Marines apply in total to mentoring.

⩥ Benefits of Mentoring.

,Answer: A mentor can be a wise adviser, teacher, and guardian. While a
formalized, structured approach to mentoring is no longer prescribed,
mentoring remains an important component of developing Marines.
Regular teaching, coaching, counseling, and mentoring between Marines
is vital. Mentoring is a relationship in which a more experienced person
unselfishly provides guidance, knowledge, and learning opportunities to
a lesser experienced person.

The most successful business leaders today have chosen more than one
mentor to assist them in understanding and navigating specific areas of
their profession. Likewise, every Marine should seek mentors to provide
similar guidance and leadership. For example, a seasoned infantry squad
leader could be a mentor to their subordinate fire team leaders. As an
NCO, you may be mentoring a young Marine today, without knowing,
simply by the example you are setting.

⩥ The tangible and intangible benefits to participating in a mentoring
partnership..
Answer: - Cost-effective professional and leadership development

-Opportunities to display and improve leadership abilities.

-Improved recruitment and retention of talent.

-Increased organizational communication.

, - Improved planning

-Increased motivation

-Increased ownership

⩥ Distinctions.
Answer: All successful Marines have pointed to one or more individuals
who had a major influence on their professional and personal lives.
Mentoring is a developmental relationship that is characterized by
mutual trust and respect. Mentoring aligns with the spirit of developing
of others that is imbedded in our institutional philosophy of leadership.

The main difference between counseling and mentoring is the focus.
Counseling focuses on the subordinate Marine's performance, which is a
vital key to the unit's ability to meet its mission. Mentoring focuses on
the development of the total Marine and the mentor's role in assisting the
subordinate to reach their full potential, which is key to developing
leaders. Both assist in a junior's development.
Mentoring and coaching are often confused because one of the functions
of mentoring is to coach; however mentoring has a broader focus than
coaching. Where coaching often provides structured processes for the
individual to achieve specific goals, mentoring places emphasis on
sharing knowledge, experience, and wisdom to enable Marines to
progressively take on tasks beyond those designated in their billet
description.
