1. Oogenesis and spermatogenesis are related in that they both ultimately produce haploid cells
and share similar meiotic and mitotic cell division, but there are significant differences between
the two. Discuss these similarities and differences below in your own words. Focus on the
timing, steps and phases of these processes in order to compare and contrast them. (Hint: Your
response should be 6-10 sentences in length.)
A diploid gamete cell divides producing haploid and egg cells through a process known as
gametogenesis, which is also occasionally referred to as spermatogenesis and oogenesis. The
process of producing eggs and sperm during meiosis is known as gametogenesis. Oogenesis
takes place in the ovaries, where it initiates mitosis in the early stages of oogonium to produce
an embryo with up to two million eggs. After the spermatogenesis phase, the spermatogonia go
through mitosis & produce sperm.
