Biographical Approach

The biographical approach is concerned with how individuals perceive and
interpret the world around them and how they define reality for themselves. It is
based on the idea that we all have an interpretive self, which helps us discover
who we are and construct a story of how we have become the person we are
today. This biography is not fixed; rather, it is a process of construction and
reconstruction that evolves as life unfolds. In contrast to theories that view
identity as largely formed in early life and relatively unchangeable, the
biographical approach highlights the social processes involved in defining and
redefining ourselves.

In social work, this perspective is sometimes described as constructive practice
because of the emphasis placed on how individuals make sense of their lives
through social interaction. Much of social work involves listening to people, often
those who are in crisis or under significant stress, as they attempt to explain,
survive, and make meaning of their circumstances. Storytelling plays a central
role in this process, whether in the form of taking social histories for reports to
court, adoption or fostering assessments, or in therapeutic work with older adults
or people whose lives have been disrupted.

Working biographically is not just about collecting the facts of someone’s history
but about exploring the meanings they attach to events and experiences. It
involves helping individuals to reflect on their lives, reconstruct their stories, and
discover or reaffirm their sense of identity. Within a UK context, this approach
aligns with the principles of person-centred care and empowerment, which
underpin professional social work values and legislation such as the Care Act. By
supporting individuals to tell their stories and understand their experiences in
new ways, social workers can help to build resilience, foster self-understanding,
and promote a stronger sense of identity and wellbeing.

The biographical approach places a strong emphasis on service user voice and
empowerment. By focusing on the individual’s own account of their life, it
recognises lived experience as a form of expertise. This aligns closely with the
values of UK social work, which prioritise participation and person-centred
practice. Encouraging people to tell their stories provides them with agency in
the social work process and supports their right to define themselves, rather
than being defined solely by professional assessments. Beyond storytelling, this
approach highlights the importance of meaning-making, identity, and resilience.
