,Page 2 - Cell Cycle Overview
Cell Cycle = Sequence of events by which cell duplicates its genome, synthesises other constituents and
divides into two daughter cells
Duration: Human cell 24 hrs, Yeast 90 min, Bacteria 20 min
Two phases: Interphase (95% time - G1 S G2) + M phase (5% - Mitosis + Cytokinesis)
Interphase = Growth phase, M phase = Division phase
Cell cycle regulated by Cyclins and Cdks (Cyclin dependent kinases) - Checkpoints ensure DNA correct

, Page 3 - G1 S G2 Phases
G1 Phase (Gap1): Post mitotic phase, cell metabolically active, growth, proteins and RNA synthesis,
organelles duplication starts
Decision point: If cell enters S or goes to G0 - depends on nutrients and growth factors
S Phase (Synthesis): DNA replication - each chromosome becomes 2 chromatids, DNA content 2C to 4C
but chromosome number same, centriole duplication in animal cells
G2 Phase (Gap2): Pre-mitotic phase, protein synthesis for mitosis, cell growth continues, checks DNA
replication errors - G2 checkpoint
Checkpoints: G1 checkpoint (most important - checks cell size, DNA damage, nutrients), S checkpoint, G2
checkpoint, M checkpoint (spindle assembly)
