QUESTION 1

1.1 Critically discuss how social attitudes and stereotypes contribute to the
challenges faced by people with disabilities, providing relevant examples. (10
marks)

Social attitudes and stereotypes have a significant influence on the experiences of
people with disabilities and often contribute to the barriers they face in everyday life.
Although disability is commonly viewed as an individual condition, the social model of
disability explains that many challenges experienced by people with disabilities are
created by society through negative attitudes, discrimination, inaccessible
environments, and exclusionary practices. Therefore, changing social perceptions is
essential for promoting equality and inclusion.

One of the major challenges faced by people with disabilities is the presence of
negative stereotypes. Society often portrays people with disabilities as helpless,
dependent, unable to make decisions, or incapable of contributing meaningfully. These
stereotypes create low expectations and limit opportunities in important areas such as
education, employment, and social participation. For example, an employer may
assume that a person with a physical disability cannot perform certain duties without
considering their actual skills, qualifications, and abilities. As a result, qualified
individuals may be denied employment opportunities because of prejudice rather than
their capability.

In education, stereotypes can negatively affect learners with disabilities. Some teachers,
parents, or school communities may believe that learners with disabilities cannot
achieve the same academic outcomes as other learners. These assumptions may result
in learners being excluded from mainstream classrooms, receiving fewer learning
opportunities, or not being encouraged to develop their full potential. Such attitudes
create educational inequalities and affect learners’ future opportunities.

, Social attitudes also contribute to exclusion from community life. People with disabilities
may experience isolation because others avoid interacting with them due to discomfort,
fear, or a lack of understanding. For example, a person with a communication disability
may be excluded from community discussions if appropriate communication support is
not provided. Similarly, a wheelchair user may be unable to attend social events
because the venue does not have accessible facilities. In these situations, the main
barrier is not the disability itself but the failure of society to create inclusive
environments.

The media also plays an important role in shaping attitudes towards disability. People
with disabilities are sometimes represented negatively as victims who require sympathy
and assistance. Although some media portrayals are positive, presenting individuals
with disabilities as “heroes” simply for achieving everyday activities can also reinforce
stereotypes by suggesting that their lives are unusual rather than normal. More accurate
representations should focus on their abilities, rights, and contributions to society.

Social attitudes may also affect access to healthcare services. Some healthcare
providers may focus mainly on a person's disability instead of considering their overall
health needs and personal preferences. This can result in unequal treatment and
reduce the quality of services received by people with disabilities.

However, attitudes towards disability are gradually changing due to disability rights
movements, awareness campaigns, inclusive education, and advocacy initiatives.
Organisations representing people with disabilities have challenged stereotypes by
promoting the idea that disability is a social justice issue rather than an issue of
individual limitation.

In conclusion, social attitudes and stereotypes create significant challenges for people
with disabilities by reinforcing discrimination, exclusion, and unequal opportunities.
These barriers affect education, employment, healthcare, and community participation.
Addressing negative attitudes requires disability awareness, inclusive policies, and
