Ceramics - ANS-compounds of metallic and nonmetallic elements

Categories of Ceramics - ANS-Traditional and Industrial Ceramics

Traditional Ceramics - ANS-Such as whiteware, tiles, bricks, sewer pipe, pottery,
and abrasive wheels

Industrial Ceramics (Engineering/High-tech/Fine Ceramics) - ANS-Turbine,
automotive, and aerospace components; heat exchangers, semiconductors; seals;
prosthetics; and cutting tools

Structure of Ceramics - ANS--The structure of ceramic crystals is among the most
complex of material structures.

-The bonding between these atoms is generally covalent (strong bonds) or ionic

-Hardness and Thermal Resistance are significantly higher in ceramics than in
metals.

-Grain size has major influence on the size and strength of properties of ceramics;
the finer the grain size, the higher the strength and toughness.

Raw materials - ANS-clay, flint. feldspar

Clay - ANS-has a fine-grained sheet-like structure

Flint - ANS-a rock composed of very fine grained silica. SiO2

Feldspar - ANS-A group of crystalline minerals consisting of aluminum silicates plus
potassium, calcium, or sodium

Types of oxide ceramics - ANS-Alumina (AL2O3). Zirconia( Zirconium oxide, ZrO2)

Alumina (AL2O3) - ANS--Called corundum or emery, is the most widely used oxide
ceramic

-Used in thermal and electrical insulators, cutting tools and abrasives

Zirconia (Zirconium oxide, ZrO2) - ANS--White in color, has good toughness; good
resistance to thermal shock, wear and corrosion; low thermal conductivity; and a
low friction coefficient

-Used in fake teeth

,Carbides - ANS-Typical carbides are those made of tungsten and titanium (used as
cutting tools and die material) and of silicon (used as an abrasive, especially in
grinding wheels)

Tungsten carbide (WC) - ANS-Consist of tungsten-carbide particles with cobalt as a
binder

Titanium carbide (TiC) - ANS-has nickel and molybdenum as the binder and is not
as tough as tungsten carbide.

Silicon carbide (SiC) - ANS--Has good resistance to wear, thermal shock, and
corrosion

-Retains strength at elevated temperatures so it is used in heat engines and as an
abrasive.

Nitrides - ANS-CBN
TiN
Silicon Nitride

cubic boron nitride (CBN) - ANS--The second hardest known substance (after
diamond)
-Cutting Tools and abrasives in grinding wheels

Titanium nitride (TiN) - ANS-used as a coating on cutting tools; it improves tool life

Silicon nitride (Si3N4) - ANS--Has high resistance to creep at elevated
temperatures

-Low thermal expansion, high thermal conductivity, and resist thermal shock

-Automotive engine, gas turbine components, bearings, sand blast nozzles.

Silica - ANS--Most glasses contains more than 50% silica

-The most common form of silica is quartz

-Silicates are products of the reaction of silica with oxides of aluminum,
magnesium, calcium, potassium, sodium and iron

Alumina - ANS-High hardness and moderate strength; most widely used ceramic;
cutting tools; abrasives; electrical and thermal insulation

Zirconia - ANS-High strength and toughness; thermal expansion close to cast iron;
suitable for high temperature application such as metallurgical furnace lining, jet
engine components, and nuclear fuel cladding

Tungsten carbide - ANS-Hardness, strength, and wear resistance depend on cobalt

, content; commonly used for cutting tools

Titanium carbide - ANS-Not as tough as tungsten carbide; has nickel and
molybdenum as the binder; used as cutting tools

Silicon carbide - ANS-High temperature strength and wear resistance; used for heat
engines and as abrasives in grinding wheels

Cubic Boron Nitride - ANS-Second hardest substance known, after diamonds; used
as abrasives and cutting tool

Titanium nitride - ANS-Gold in color' used as coatings because of low frictional
characteristics

Silicon nitride - ANS-High resistance to creep and thermal shock; used in high
temperature applications such as turbocharger components, rolling element
bearings and cutting tools

Sialon - ANS-Consist of silicon nitrides and other oxides and carbides; used as
cutting tools and feed tubes and linings for non ferrous metal casting

Properties of Ceramics - ANS-- High strength and hardness at elevated
temperatures

-High elastic modulus

-Low toughness, density, thermal expansion, thermal and electrical conductivity

Properties of Ceramics - ANS-- Lack impact toughness and thermal shock resistance
and lack of ductility

-Ceramics exhibit a phenomenon called static fatigue; when subjected to a static
tensile load over a period of time, these materials suddenly may fail

-This phenomenon occurs in environment where water is present

Ceramics Applications - ANS--Electrical and electronics industries

-Automobiles

-Gas turbine engine

-Coating metal

-Turbochargers

-Cylinder liners
