Eugene Kinckle Jones is the seventh Jewel and one of the first initiates (p. 31). Although he

was present on December 4, 1906 when the decision to form a fraternity was made, he was

not enrolled as a student at Cornell during the academic year of 1905-06. It was at the 38th

General Convention, 1952 in Cleveland, Ohio, that it was decided that several paragraphs of

the early history of the Fraternity were in need of rewriting with a view of placing Brother

Jones in his true historical setting resulting from the leading role which he had played in the

orgin and development of the early years of the fraternity history (p. 332). During this

convention, a special committee presented a report that recommended that "Brother Jones be

, listed as one of the seven Jewels.. The report was adopted by the Convention on December

29, 1952

upon at a meeting on October 23, 1906, while the organization was a social study club.

Why was the fraternity organized

The fraternity was initially formed as a social club for black men to have a common bond

socially. The evolution from club to fraternity was through trial and struggle. There were

certain individuals who preferred a fraternity from the beginning of the movement, but their

voices, being in the minority, could accomplish little. Throughout 1905-06, the literary club

idea had the ascendency under C.C. Poindexter, but the proponents of the fraternity led by

George B. Kelley, who was ably seconded by other, refused to relinquish their efforts (p. 25)
