The anterior compartment of thigh contains 8 muscles.
1) Sartorius
2) Iliacus
3) Psoas
4) Pectineus
Quadriceps femoris is a group of four muscles.
5) Rectus femoris
6) Vastus lateralis
7) Vastus medialis
8) Vastus intermedius

,Now we will discuss all these muscles ,
their origin, insertion, innervation and
actions one by one.

, 1 Sartorius
Origin :
Anterior superior iliac spine.

Insertion :
Upper and medial surface of the shaft of tibia.

Innervation :
Femoral nerve ( L2, L3)

Action :
Flexes , abducts and laterally rotates thigh at hip joint.
Flexes and medially rotates leg at knee joint.

, 2 Iliacus
Origin :
Iliac fossa of the hip bone.

Insertion :
With psoas into the lesser trochanter of femur.

Innervation :
Femoral nerve ( L2, L3)

Action :
Flexes thigh on trunk .
If thigh is fixed , then it flexes the trunk on the thigh as
in sitting up from lying down.

, 3 Psoas major
Origin :
Transverse processes, bodies and intervertebral discs of the
12th Thoracic and five lumbar vertebrae.

Insertion :
With iliacus into the lesser trochanter of femur.
Innervation :
Lumbar plexus (L1, L2, L3)
Action :
Flexes thigh on trunk .
If thigh is fixed , then it flexes the trunk on the thigh as
in sitting up from lying down.

, 4 Pectineus

Origin :
Superior ramus of pubis.

Insertion :
Upper end of the linea aspera of shaft of femur.

Innervation :
Femoral nerve ( L2, L3)

Action :
Flexes and adducts thigh at hip joint.

, 5 Rectus femoris
Origin :
Straight head : Anterior inferior iliac spine.
Reflected head : Ilium above acetabulum.

Insertion :
Quadriceps tendon into patella.
Then via patellar ligament into tubercle of tibia.
Innervation :
Femoral nerve (L2, L3, L4).
Action :
