SOLUTIONS RATED A+
✔✔Homework Assignments PE Module - ✔✔- No specific hw for this module - can be
helpful to provide caregivers with handouts to reinforce things discussed in session

✔✔PE by age group - ✔✔Early Childhood - PE focused toward caregivers. For young
children PE focused on normalizing responses to experiences and validating.

Middle Childhood - Can understand the information but would benefit from a game or

also helpful

Providing caregivers and youth with an overview of the TF-CBT treatment process
Giving families access to information about traumatic stress
Taking a developmentally sensitive approach to sharing information
Assessing the child's trauma symptoms and appropriateness for TF-CBT
Establishing rapport with the patient and caregiver - ✔✔Assessing the child's trauma

✔✔Physical abuse and punishment are not the same thing.
Physically abused kids often struggle to understand the difference between
"punishment" and "abusive discipline."

✔✔Which statement below is the most accurate regarding how to choose therapeutic
activities within the Psychoeducation module?
Psychoeducation must be delivered by using games and fun activities.
Conjoint activities including both caregivers and kids are discouraged in this module.
You should avoid play activities during Psychoeducation so the child does not establish
expectation that TF-CBT is "play time" or fun.

,Therapeutic activities will vary across cases, depending in part on the developmental
age of the child.
Activities aimed at conveying psychoeducation need to be targeted at the child's
developmental level, not necessarily his or her chronological age. - ✔✔Therapeutic

✔✔Parenting Skills Module - ✔✔1-Parent PE - Help provide understanding of the
impact of trauma on behavior (ex - behavior increasing as a result of traumatic events).
Help reframe explanations for undesirable behaviors.

2-Teach Praise - Praise specific behaviors, label praise, provide asap, be consistent,
avoid adding negative statements, be enthusiastic

3-Combine Praise & Active Ignoring - active ignoring includes avoiding reactions,
expression, or any communication. Ignore behaviors such as anger/defiance, nasty
faces, mimicking. Do not ignore serious behaviors.

4-Teach time out use - Interrupt behavior and take away attention. Best used for
children under 12.

5-Contingency Management - Select one behavior at a time, discuss how to earn
preferred items for behaviors, involve child in discussions for incentives, give rewards
consistently

6-Role Play - Begin with parent acting as child - once mastery demonstrated can swap
to parent to assess skills

✔✔Relaxation Strategies Module - ✔✔1-Controlled Breathing
2-PMR
3-Alternative Approaches
4-Applying Relaxation Strategies

✔✔Controlled Breathing Strategy - ✔✔Explain rationale
Although you should always explain why you are teaching a particular skill to a client, it
is especially important for controlled breathing. After all, people breathe every day
without any special instructions! The basic rationale is that breathing slowly will help
control their level of tension and distress.

Demonstrate proper body positioning
You and the child should be sitting comfortably in chairs, feet on the floor and arms at
your sides. Place one hand on your belly, below the rib cage, and the other on your
chest.

, Demonstrate proper breathing technique
You should practice this some yourself to make sure you can demonstrate it effectively,
so that the hand on your chest stays relatively still while the hand on your belly rises
and falls with your breaths. Be sure to praise the client's good attempts at the technique.
Once the child has tried with a few breaths, instruct the child to breathe more slowly on
the exhalations than on the inhalations. This can be done by counting, or simply by
concentrating on breathing out slowly.

Introduce relaxing word
Once the child seems to have the hang of exhaling slowly, have him or her choose a
word to say silently while exhaling. Good examples are "Calm" or "Relax." Instruct the
child to try to think only about breathing and this word. As other thoughts come into the
child's head, the child should try to picture them floating away.

Have child demonstrate
When the child is ready, it is time to "test" the child's mastery. Some children might like
to lie down on the floor with a small toy or paper cup on their belly (though other
children might find it quite uncomfortable to lie on the floor in a room with an adult. Use
your best judgment for your clients!). With each breath, the object should move up and
down. Praise successful attempts

✔✔PMR - ✔✔Teaching Muscle Relaxation
Explain rationale for progressive muscle relaxation to child
Explain that when people's muscles are not relaxed, we may feel tense, sore, or
nervous. By relaxing them, we feel calmer and more in control.

Make child comfortable
Do your best to create a relaxing environment in your office. Have the child assume a
comfortable body position. This will vary depending on the relaxation technique you are
using, but generally for progressive muscle relaxation, the best body position is lying
down or reclining comfortably in a chair. For younger kids who are tensing and relaxing
the entire body, standing up with a comfortable chair (or beanbag chair) behind them is
also effective.

Demonstrate technique and induce relaxation
Again, this will vary according to the type of relaxation being demonstrated. For younger
children, it is often best to do a full body demonstration of PMR before having the child
repeat after you. For older children, demonstrating the technique for each muscle group
and having the child repeat each action works well

✔✔Alternative Approaches - ✔✔While many children and teens benefit from formal
relaxation strategies like controlled breathing and progressive muscle relaxation, it can
be useful to offer choices between these formal activities and activities that tap into
already established preferences.
