Objective of the project:.......................................................................................................................1
Review of Literature:.............................................................................................................................2
Methodology.........................................................................................................................................4
1. Observation and Segregation: The first step involved observing the types and quantity of plastics
generated in households over a period of two weeks. Common household plastics, such as PET
bottles, HDPE containers, polythene bags, food packaging, and disposable cutlery, were identified.
Each item was segregated based on its recyclability. This source segregation is critical because
mixing plastics with organic waste or non-recyclable materials reduces the efficiency of recycling.
Households were instructed to separate plastics into categories such as hard plastics (bottles,
containers) and soft plastics (bags, films), ensuring that all materials were clean and free of food
residues.............................................................................................................................................4
2. Mechanical Recycling: The first technique applied was mechanical recycling, which involves
processing plastics to create new usable products. In this method, segregated plastics were
cleaned thoroughly, shredded into small pieces, and melted under controlled conditions. The
melted plastic was then molded into new household items, such as dustbins, flower pots, or
storage containers. Mechanical recycling not only reduces the volume of plastic waste but also
conserves energy and raw materials, as recycled plastics require less energy to produce than new
ones...................................................................................................................................................4
