Master the OCR A-Level Chemistry Required Practicals with this comprehensive revision guide containing 35+ essential practical methods, experimental procedures, qualitative tests, calculations, and analytical techniques required for success in OCR A-Level Chemistry examinations. Presented in a structured question-and-answer format, this resource provides clear, step-by-step laboratory procedures alongside the scientific principles behind each experiment, making it an invaluable study aid for practical endorsement preparation, written examinations, and laboratory assessments. This revision guide provides extensive coverage of the OCR A Required Practical Activities (PAGs), including preparation of standard solutions, acid-base titrations, enthalpy change experiments, reaction rate investigations, gas collection methods, qualitative analysis of ions, flame tests, halide tests, sulfate and carbonate tests, ammonium tests, redox titrations, potassium manganate(VII) titrations, iodine-thiosulfate titrations, electrochemical cells, standard electrode potentials, equilibrium constant (Kc) determination, pH curves, buffer solutions, colorimetry, thin-layer chromatography (TLC), organic synthesis, reflux, distillation, recrystallisation, filtration under reduced pressure, purification of organic liquids and solids, melting point determination, percentage purity calculations, relative molecular mass determination, calorimetry, enthalpy of combustion, enthalpy of solution, reaction mechanisms, analytical chemistry techniques, and laboratory safety procedures. Each practical is presented as a concise revision sequence that reinforces both experimental methodology and the exam-style questions commonly assessed in OCR A-Level Chemistry. The resource is ideal for students preparing for the OCR Practical Endorsement (PAGs), OCR A-Level Chemistry Paper 3, practical examination questions, mock practical assessments, final A-Level examinations, and university laboratory preparation. It also serves as an excellent laboratory companion for independent revision, teacher-led practical sessions, tutoring, and rapid review before examinations by consolidating every major practical technique into one organised study guide. The material is aligned with the OCR A Level Chemistry A (H432) Specification and reflects the experimental methods described in authoritative academic resources, including the OCR Practical Endorsement Handbook, OCR A Level Chemistry A Specification (H432, OCR), Ritchie, R., & Gent, M. OCR A Level Chemistry Student Books 1 & 2 (Oxford University Press), Clark, J. Chemguide Practical Chemistry, and Atkins, P., & de Paula, J. Atkins' Physical Chemistry (Oxford University Press), all widely recognised references for advanced chemistry practical work and examination preparation. Relevant Students: OCR A-Level Chemistry students, Year 12 Chemistry students, Year 13 Chemistry students, Sixth Form students, College Chemistry students, Practical Endorsement candidates, A-Level Chemistry examination candidates, Foundation Year Chemistry students, Laboratory Chemistry students, Chemistry tutors, Science teachers, University applicants for Chemistry, Medicine, Pharmacy, Dentistry, Biomedical Science, Chemical Engineering, Natural Sciences, and STEM students requiring advanced laboratory skills. practicals (OCR A)

Making a standard solution- - ANSWER ✔✔- Weigh the sample bottle

containing the required mass of solid on a 2d.p balance.

- Transfer to beaker and reweigh sample bottle.

- Record the difference in mass.

- Add 100cm3 of distilled water to the beaker. Use a glass rod to stir to

help dissolve the solid.

- Pour solution into a 250cm3 volumetric flask via a funnel.

- Rinse beaker and funnel and add washings from the beaker and glass

rod to the conical flask.

,- Makeup to the mark the meniscus touched the marked line with

distilled water using a dropping pipette for the last few drops.

- slowly invert flask several times.

Ensure all of the oxygen has been achieved - ANSWER ✔✔- heat to

constant mass

- break up the lead oxide to increase the surface area for reaction

- pass methane through a tube as it cools

-bubble gas through lime water

- use excess methane

-bubble escaping gas through limewater

Carrying out an acid-base titration - ANSWER ✔✔- Rinse equipment

(burette with acid, pipette with alkali, conical flask with distilled water).

- Pipette 25cm3 of alkali into conical flask using a volumetric pipette.

- Touch surface of alkali with pipette.

- Fill the burette with acid.

- Make sure the jet space in the burette is filled with acid and turn on the

tap to let a little bit of acid out to let air bubbles are not present in the jet

space

,- Record initial burette reading.

- Add a few drops of phenolphthalein.

- Place a white tile underneath the flask to help observe the colour

change.

- Add acid to alkali whilst swirling the mixture and add acid dropwise

near endpoint.

- Stop adding acid when colour change

- Record final burette reading.

- Repeat titration until at least 2 concordant results are obtained.

- calculate the mean titre from two concordant results

Measuring an enthalpy change - ANSWER ✔✔- Place a polystyrene

cup in a beaker for insulation and support.

- Clamp thermometer into place making sure the thermometer bulb is

immersed in liquid.

- Measure the initial temperature of the solution.

- Transfer reagents to cup. If a solid reagent is used then add the

solution to the cup first and then add the solid weighed out on a balance.

- Stir mixture.

, - Measure the final temperature.

Investigating how rate changes with temperature - ANSWER ✔✔-

Use a measuring cylinder to measure 10.0 cm3 of 0.05 moldm3 sodium

thiosulphate solution into a conical flask. Place this on a white tile with a

cross drawn on it.

- Note the initial temperature.

- Add 1cm3 of HCl to the thiosulphate solution and start timing.

- Record time for the cross to disappear from view.

- Record the final temperature of the reaction mixture.

- Repeat using different temperatures to obtain result 5 different

temperatures in total.

- Plot a graph of temperature against time, using the average

temperature for each reaction.

Monitoring production of gas - ANSWER ✔✔1. Hydrogen peroxide is

added to the conical flask ad the bung is replace

2 . the volume of gas in the measuring cylinder is recorded

3. Manganese dioxide catalyst the quickly added to the conical flask and

the bung is replaced A stop clock is started.
