D223 – UKM2 – Performance Assessment 1
Hospital Examination
A1. Hospital Selection
- I have chosen Avera McKennan Hospital and University Health Center in Sioux Falls,
South Dakota.
A2. Personal significance of the chosen hospital
- While working as a travel nurse, I had the privilege to work at many of the hospitals in
my state. This facility was the only place I ever accepted a contract extension, and I
stayed for a year. The culture of caring there just made everything feel like home.
A3. Type of Facility
- Avera is a non-profit acute care hospital.
A3a. Medical Services Provided
- Avera McKennan offers a comprehensive patient experience with accreditation through
The Joint Commission. With 24/7 emergency care and certification as a comprehensive
stroke center. Designation as a level II trauma center with its own Avera Careflight team
and onsite helipad. The radiology department offers CT, MRI, PET scans, nuclear
medicine, and digital mammography. The surgery department specializes in orthopedics,
neurology, and vascular and has been a Medicare-certified solid organ transplant facility
since 2001. The obstetrics staff offers care not only for the birth and initial hospital stay,
but they set you up with education and follow-up visits, child life specialists, and
parenting classes if you should choose. There are also neonatologists for high-risk infants
and a level IIIB NICU. For mom, should it be needed perinatologist for high-risk
deliveries. An extensive care center called The Prairie Center has been newly built. Avera
is the only accredited cancer treatment center in our region. Offering private or group
treatment, meditation rooms, treatment chairs with heat and massage, acupuncture,
aromatherapy, therapeutic massage, and art, music, or guided imagery.
