, Introduction

The contemporary strategic management landscape is increasingly characterised by volatility,
uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity (VUCA), requiring organisations to continuously adapt their
strategies to survive and thrive within dynamic macro-environments. This assignment critically
examines the strategic positioning of Flutterwave, a leading African fintech unicorn, through
multiple theoretical lenses. Question 2 applies the VUCA framework to analyse the
macro-environmental characteristics that shaped Flutterwave's founding and strategic trajectory.
Question 3 employs Porter's Five Forces framework to critically analyse the intensity of rivalry
within the African fintech industry and its implications for Flutterwave's sustained competitive
advantage. Question 4 evaluates Flutterwave's business-level strategy, identifying its broad
differentiation approach and assessing its advantages, disadvantages, and overall effectiveness.
Finally, Question 5 explores the concept of disruptive innovation, compares the four primary
innovation strategies as articulated by Louw and Venter (2024), and determines which strategy
Flutterwave adopted based on case study evidence. Collectively, these analyses demonstrate how a
strategically agile firm can transform macro-environmental challenges into competitive
differentiators while navigating intense industry rivalry and disruptive change.

Question 2: Critically Discussing the Macro-Environment Using the VUCA Framework in the
Strategic Context of Flutterwave

The macro-environment encompasses the broad, uncontrollable external forces that shape
organisational strategy, risk, and opportunity (Thompson et al., 2020). One of the most influential
contemporary frameworks for analysing such dynamics is VUCA, an acronym standing for Volatility,
Uncertainty, Complexity, and Ambiguity. Originating from the US Army War College in the late
1990s, VUCA was adopted into strategic management to characterise environments that are
increasingly chaotic, interdependent, and difficult to predict (Bennett & Lemoine, 2014, as cited in
Lawrence, 2023). However, a critical perspective suggests that VUCA is often misapplied when
managers conflate its four elements, leading to generic or ineffective strategic responses (Mack,
Khare, Krämer & Burgartz, 2020). This discussion applies VUCA to Flutterwave, a leading African
fintech unicorn, to critically examine how these macro-characteristics influenced its founding and
strategic trajectory. Three specific macro-environmental factors evident in the case study that
influenced the founding of Flutterwave are also identified.

Applying the VUCA Framework to Flutterwave
Volatility refers to the nature, speed, magnitude, and unpredictability of change, where
information is available but change is rapid and sustained (Lawrence, 2023). In Flutterwave’s
macro-environment, volatility manifests through frequent fluctuations in currency exchange rates
across African economies and sudden shifts in central bank policies regarding digital payments.
According to Bennani (2021, p. 47), in highly volatile environments, organisations must build "agile
and redundant systems" rather than attempting long-term forecasting. Flutterwave responded to
this volatility by engineering a payment API that dynamically adapts to different currencies and
local payment methods (e.g., M-Pesa in Kenya, mobile money in Ghana) without requiring
merchants to reconstruct their systems. This strategic agility allowed the firm to treat volatility not
as a threat but as a driver of differentiation.
