, QUESTION 1: Definition of Terms

(a) Accessibility

Accessibility refers to the design of physical environments, transportation, information,
communication systems, technologies, products and services so that they can be
accessed and used independently, safely and equally by persons with disabilities.
Accessibility aims to eliminate barriers that prevent people with disabilities from
participating fully in education, employment, healthcare, public services and community
life (United Nations [UN], 2006; World Health Organization [WHO], 2022).

(b) Medical Model of Disability

The Medical Model of Disability views disability as a problem that exists within the
individual because of an illness, injury or impairment. According to this model, disability
should be treated, cured or managed through medical intervention and rehabilitation.
The emphasis is placed on improving the individual's condition rather than addressing
barriers within society (Shakespeare, 2018; WHO, 2001).

(c) Stigmatisation

Stigmatisation is the process of assigning negative stereotypes, prejudices or
discriminatory attitudes towards individuals because of characteristics such as disability.
Stigma often results in exclusion, discrimination, reduced opportunities and social
isolation, preventing persons with disabilities from participating equally in society (WHO,
2022; Goffman, 1963).
