What I Learned From the Interview
For this activity, I Interviewed Felipe den Brok, who is the director of the Mayor's
Office of Emergency Preparedness (OEP) in Atlanta. Previously, den Brok has served in several
emergency-related fields, including the United States Army, Atlanta Police Department, and as
a special agent of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. In 2018 also, he served as an emergency
preparedness analyst of Equifax Crisis Management. In this interview, I used open-ended
questions, which led the interviewee to provide in-depth information (See the Appendix). I first
booked an appointment to visit den Brok's office through an email in which I explained I would
be gathering information for a master's degree program. Fortunately, the director agreed to host
me on May 19, 2020, at 11.00 am. I visited den Brok's office, and he decided to participate in an
interview on May 20, 2020, from 10.00 am to 11.30 am. This interview happened in his office
at 55 Trinity Avenue, Atlanta. The following section presents the findings I gained from the
meeting.
The Mission
According to den Brok, Atlanta's OEP aims at building an affordable, resilient and
equitable city. Notably, this office is a branch of the state of Georgia's FEMA unit; that is why it
has to build the city's preparedness and resilience against disasters.
Responsibilities of den Brok
Den Brok's office plays a critical role in disaster preparedness, response, and recovery,
mainly through coordinating the city's resources, residents, and partners. Precisely, den Brok
