Course introduction – BLM
General information




Melanoma = skin cancer, one of the most dangerous cancer.

To prevent cancer, you must know how the cells normally work/how healthy cells work. We will use
cell culture to investigate this instead of C. elegans.

Cancer development
 Hallmarks of cancer
 BLM cells = melanoma cells
o Activating invasion & metastasis is investigated in these cells, because you can not
investigate all the hallmarks of cancer at once.

Cell culture
 BLM cells = invasive melanoma cell line.
 The arrows show extensions which show that the cells are moving/migrating.
