Case Study
Johnny's date of birth is January 28, 2019. He recently completed a comprehensive
speech-language evaluation on May 4, 2023. The results indicated a moderate speech sound
disorder. His overall speech intelligibility in conversation was judged to be 70%. In single-word
testing, he had errors on /sh, ch, s, z, r, l, f, v/. He used the phonological processes of stopping
(replaced f/v with p/b and s/z with t/d), final consonant deletion, and weak syllable deletion. He
was not stimulable for any of the sounds in error. His language skills are age-appropriate.
Possible Goal
During a structured speech activity, given multimodal cues, Johnny will produce final consonants
in CVC words with 80% accuracy over 3 consecutive sessions, as measured by
clinician-collected data.
Goal Justification
According to ASHA, FCD should likely be eliminated by age 3. Johnny is now 4, so this would
be an appropriate goal to target. In addition, targeting FCD will help increase his overall
intelligibility.
