Question 1

a)
i) A business ecosystem is a network of organisations involved in the delivery of a
specific product or service through competition and cooperation, or a network of
interlinked companies that dynamically interact with each other through
competition and cooperation to grow sales and survive and the participants include
suppliers, distributors, consumers, government, processes, products and
competitors.
ii) The business ecosystem approach improves coordination and collaborations with
other organisations in mutual self-interest to achieve increased sales and value
creation and capture. The firm will benefit from the patterns of behaviour that
streamline the flow of ideas, talent and capital throughout the system
b) PESTEL provides a rigid analysis to the operating environment which in reality will have more
than just political, economic, social, technological, ecological and legal dimensions to it. The
model excludes collaborations, competition and cooperation in the process of value creation
and capture, it also ignores consumers.
c) The first goal of business ecosystems is to provide participants with mechanisms to leverage
technology to achieve excellence in research and business competence and compete
effectively against other companies. Gaeko (Pty) Ltd will benefit from being part of the
ecosystem as these mechanisms will create a barrier to entry into the market as competitors
not only need to replace the product of the firm but fight the entire ecosystem.
Business ecosystems also are a driving force behind new collaborations to address rising
social and environmental challenges in the operating environment. The system adopts to
change and prompts change by the participants to ensure compliance to changing standards
and preferences and ensure the continued existence of the entire business ecosystem.
The business ecosystem seeks to harness creativity and innovation to lower the cost of
production or allow members to reach new customers. The system provides a convenient
environment that allows flow of information and resources and allows all members to give
and acquire knowledge on the developments across the system for the benefit of the entire
system.
Another goal is to accelerate the learning process to effectively collaborate and share
insights, skills, expertise and knowledge of the processes and products in the ecosystem.
Gaeko Pty ltd will benefit from this as it effectively improves the business’s knowledge of
production techniques, conversions of the industry and get improved efficiency at a lower
cost compared to doing research on its own.
The business ecosystems can also create new ways to address fundamental human needs
and desires. This comes in form of new processes, products and services that give new
experiences to the consumers. The reach of the business ecosystem is a product of a single
firm which means the resources dedicated to research innovation are leveraged by the
collaboration given in an ecosystem to give an output of knowledge that is far greater for all
the members of the ecosystem

d) Mr Paid is a benevolent autocrat, this leadership style allows subordinates to contribute
ideas but the decision is made by the leader himself at a time which he becomes more
autocratic. This can be seen from the fact that Mr Paid firmly believes in the methods he has
