In many higher education programs, a master's thesis is the final project that students

must complete before they can earn their degree and graduate. This thesis is the sum of all that is

learned throughout the student’s journey through their coursework. As a result, this task is

demanding; often, only a small proportion of students manage to complete a high-quality thesis

within their designated time frame (Ali et al., 2025). The master's thesis is a major challenge for

students, with a majority of students unable to complete it. To support students, educational

institutions are mandating supervision through the construction of the thesis. Supervision

provides aid to students as their supervisor oversees their project of an individual student helping

to overcome challenges in comprehending or executing tasks (Ali et al., 2025). The supervisor

helps and guides the completion of the master's thesis to optimize the learning and efficiency of

students. In this study, researchers wanted to explore these relationships further, to understand

the process of thesis supervision and how it impacts students. By accomplishing this, researchers

can determine areas of the supervising process that can be improved to strengthen the

relationship between supervisor and student, to ultimately create better outcomes for the

students.

Statement of the Problem

Supervising students during the construction of their thesis is crucial to supporting

students to put their best work forward. However, the supervisory model can often be confusing,

and students may be missing the support they need. The role of the supervisor can often be

vague, with conflicting expectations and goals between the supervisor and the student (Ali et al.,

2025). This discrepancy was identified by the researchers and shows that the relationship

between the supervisor and student can be jeopardized due to role confusion, highlighting a
