Answers
Write down all the reasons that you can think of for why you want to become a teacher.

Are your reasons different or the same compared to those you have encountered in the

course materials? Why do you think so?

Reasons in the material:

- it's challenging, it's never boring, it's important, our democracy depends on what happens in our

schools, teachers touch the future

- help another human

- teachers I had were so dreadfully awful, that I want to become a teacher

How did it come about that you decided to become a teacher? Who or what influenced your

decision? Was your decision immediate and firm, or did it grow on you over the years?

How sure are you of your decision to become a teacher at this time? Why?

I was always interested in the thought of teaching, but I never really wanted to pursue it until I

started substitute teaching. Once I started substitute teaching my decision was firm and I am very

sure in my decision to become a teacher at this time as I want to help shape those who our

democracy is going to depend on in the future and help other humans.

If the purpose of teaching is student achievement, in what ways is that achievement the

responsibility of the teacher, and in what ways is it the responsibility of the student? What

can teachers do to try to help students fulfil their responsibilities in this regard?

Teaching for student achievement is the responsibility of the teacher in the fact that teachers

must support students in order for them to achieve. In contrast, students must support there I

, want achievement by completing the work and doing what the teacher says in order for them to

be successful.

As teachers, how can we improve the effectiveness of the many teacher-student interactions

that take place in our classrooms during teaching and learning? How can other additional

interactions we have with our students assist us in this endeavor?

Some suggest that one reason teaching today is different from teaching in the past is that

the world of today is much different. What are some features of today's world that affect

teaching, and how do they affect it? What could you as a teacher do to "adjust" for these

features?

Discuss the pros and cons of having a set provincial curriculum rather than leaving all

curriculum decisions up to individual teachers. Further, what kinds of curriculum

decisions do you think should be left up to teachers?

Explain, using classroom examples, the differences between content learning goals, skill

learning goals, and attitude learning goals. State your thoughts on the relative importance

of each. Also, suggest any other kinds of goals that you think should also be addressed.

Suggest some criteria that could be used to decide which particular content goals should be

part of a program of studies for drama (theatre) or for some other school subject area of

your choosing.

Examine the Alberta Elementary Science Program of Studies. Critique one of the units for

its strengths and weaknesses, and tell how you would improve it. (Note: there are six units

at each grade level). The AESPOS can be found at
