Unit 10: Sociological Perspective
P1: Explain how sociological perspectives are applied to the
understanding of health and social care.
Sociology is a social science that studies how society is organised and how we
experience life. It seeks to provide insights into, and evidence about, the many
forms of relationship among people.
Social institutions are a group/organisation that have specific roles, norms and
expectations, which functions to meet the social needs of society. Family,
government, religion, education and media are all examples of influential
institutions in society. Each institution plays a vital role in the functioning of
society.
Family is the first influence upon a child’s socialisation as the norms, values
and behaviours they inherit shape their visual interpretation of the world.
Family members are important as they have the power to make the most
contact with the infant/child that influences their social skills and behaviour for
the rest of their lives (Nickerson,2023)

Education serves as a formal agent of socialisation as educational institutions
such as schools transmit intellectual growth as well as boosts social
integration, personal development. Both education and socialisation build the
overall development of a person's character. Education promotes economic
stability; diversity reduces crime and promotes greater equality.

Health and social care services are responsible for providing a variety of
support systems ranging from practical medical care in public institutions like
hospitals and GP practices to communal support such as attending home visits
and counselling programmes. Their main purpose is to improve the quality of
life for people who access their services. Individuals with learning disabilities,
long term illnesses, physical disabilities and mental illnesses are classified to be
vulnerable people as they require help when accomplishing daily tasks such as
cooking, washing and cleaning as well as emotional support, therefore by
,accessing health and social care services, care associated to their personal
needs can be discussed and actioned. (HFT,2022)

Socialisation is the process through which children learn to be effective
members of society. Begins during childhood by which individuals acquire the
values, habits, and attitudes of a society. Involving the development of the
human brain, body, attitude and behaviour. It is an essential part of social
interaction as individuals become socialised as they act in accordance with the
expectation of others.
Social class is the measure of a person's status or position within society.
Usually takes in account a person's income/wealth, occupation, education-etc.
These factors affect how much power a person inherits. Social class has a
heavy influence towards the level of employment an individual can inherit and
therefore determines a specific income amount a family will receive. Issues
such as access to reaching necessary health and social care services can arise
due to not being financially able to afford transportation as it is quite costly.
Marxists tend to argue that social class affects an individual's ability to live in a
state that achiever their holistic needs. They also argue that an individual's
behaviours are influenced by society, yet the economic system controls the
way society runs as well as an individual's positions within it. A person's social
class highly affects their behaviour as those apart of the lower class will likely
opt to purchase supermarkets own brand foods due to the inflated prices food
items have sustained over the years, they have limited option, but to have a
high fat, salt and sugar intake that is submerged within cheap food products.
Although, they are maintaining their low income by buying cheap and ready
meals/items they are bound to experience a huge decline in their energy levels
and are at risk of further health complications if for example, their salt intake is
excessively high they can gain high cholesterol which places them at a strong
likelihood of inheriting and passing on other health issues. By exercising
regularly an individual can prevent their health and wellbeing from
deteriorating!
, Disability is the experience of any condition that makes it difficult for a person
to do certain activities or have access within a given society. It may be
cognitive, developmental, intellectual, mental, physical, sensory or a
combination of multiple factors. They can be present from birth or can be
acquired during a person’s lifetime. It can be readily visible, whereas for some
it is found within their personal nature. (“What Counts as Disability | Disability

Race refers to dividing the human species into groups such as those who share
certain inherited physical characteristics, such as skin colour, facial features,
and height. An individuals race and ethnic or national origin has a significant
impact when linking to health and social as well as their behaviour depending
on different practices. Swansea located across the UK region is acknowledged
to have the highest amount of white or other British citizens residing within its
city, 91.7% which is around 218,100 people! The leftover statistics are people
of ethnic minority, who are gradually filling the rest of the population of
Swansea partially due to employment purpose or a change of housing.
However, due to the grand white and British figures, those apart of any other
ethnic group are likely to experience discrimination when in the workplace due
to prejudice beliefs as many individuals who are a part of a differing
background may have a unique appearance compared to an average white
individual and therefore are likely to be treated unequally due to their
features. Discriminatory opinions of individuals result in many of those apart of
ethnic minority being positioned within lower paying jobs as they are
illustrated as not being capable of fulfilling the role of a rewarding job. Once
individuals begin to understand that they are being treated unfairly in
everyday society they will feel at unease when going out in public and will no
longer feel confident enough to partake in new hobbies and integrate with
other members of the community. The poor treatment of individuals who
associate themselves with another culture, yet want to involve themselves
apart of a new society, yet face constant criticism and neglection can create a
burden upon a person's social development leaving them to be lonely and
isolated which will accumulate to having a negative effect upon their physical,
