thoughts, beliefs, and behaviors

SCHIZOPHRENIFORM DISORDER - ANS-Same symptoms of schizophrenia but
lasting one month but no more than six.

CONVERSION DISORDER - ANS-a rare somatoform disorder in which a person
experiences very specific genuine physical symptoms for which no physiological basis
can be found. Has been traced to two etiological mechanisms: Primary Gain (keeping
an inner conflict out of consciousness) and secondary gain (avoiding an unpleasant
activity). Alleviated under hypnosis.

FACTITIOUS DISORDER - ANS-an illness with no identifiable physical cause, in which
the patient is believed to be intentionally producing or faking symptoms in order to
assume a sick role

HYPOCHONDRIASIS - ANS-A somatoform disorder characterized by excessive
preoccupation with health concerns and incessant worry about developing physical
illnesses.

is usually voluntary and cannot be explained by a medical condition or substance use.

of one or more of three key symptoms: extreme inattention, hyperactivity, and
impulsivity.

involves repeated regurgitaiton, rechewing of food without apparent nausea or disgust

STUTTERING - ANS-Speech pattern in which long pauses are injected into sentences,
or one sound or phrase is repeated. Onset is normally between the ages of 2 and 7 but
can remit again by age 16.

TOURETTE'S DISORDER - ANS-A disorder characterized by multiple motor tics (e.g.,
eye-blinking, skipping, deep knee bends) and one or more vocal tics (e.g., grunts,
barks, sniffs, snorts, coughs, utterance of obscenities).

AUTISTIC DISORDER - ANS-Pervasive Developmental Disorder where there are three
defining features: impairment of social interaction, impairment of communication,
restricted, repetitive, stereotyped patterns of behavior, interests, and activities.

SEPARATION ANXIETY DISORDER - ANS-Childhood disorder where developmentally
inappropriate and excessive anxiety concerning separation from home or attachment
figures.

ACUTE STRESS DISORDER - ANS-an anxiety disorder in which fear and related
symptoms are experienced soon after a traumatic event and last less than a month
(similar to PTSD).

PTSD - ANS-person has been exposed to a traumatic event which is persistently re-
experienced. Persistent avoidance of stimuli associated with the trauma and numbing of
general responsivenss. Persistent symptoms of increased arousal. Duration is >1 month

ADJUSTMENT DISORDER - ANS-A disorder characterized by a maladaptive reaction
to one or more identifiable psychosocial stressors.

DYSTHYMIC DISORDER - ANS-A mood disorder involving a pattern of chronic
depressed mood that lasts for at least two years in adults and one year in children.

BULIMIA NERVOSA - ANS-An Eating Disorder; recurrent episodes of binging and
purging (massive eating in private, hiding out then throwing up or laxative usage), looks
normal in weight (often) and is obsessed with maintaining weight not necessarily losing
weight ; symptoms include: bruising on hand, suspicious behavior, binging/purging,
smell from skin and mouth, lank hair, rotting teeth (eventually), puffy skin; Onset: late
adolescence, more white middle-class females, but rising in white males.

ANOREXIA NERVOSA - ANS-An Eating Disorder involving a fear of gaining weight,
refusal to maintain minimal normal body weight, disturbed perception of body image and
amenorrhea in females.

OBSESSIVE-COMPULSIVE DISORDER - ANS-An anxiety disorder characterized by
unwanted repetitive thoughts (obsession) and/ or actions (compulsions).

PREMATURE EJACULATION - ANS-A Sexual Dysfunction in males where the orgasm
and ejaculation occur with minimal sexual stimulation.

PARAPHILIA - ANS-Recurrent intense sexual urge, fantasy, or behavior that involves
unusual objects, activities, or situations.

VAGINISMUS - ANS-involuntary muscle spasms in the outer part of the vagina that
make intercourse impossible
